Tai Ji Quan, Moving for Better Balance is a community-based fall prevention program developed by Dr. Fuzhong Li at the Oregon Research Institute. It adapts traditional tai chi into eight forms designed to build lower-body strength, improve balance, and increase confidence in walking. The CDC and the National Council on Aging both recognize it as an evidence-based fall prevention program. In Washington, classes are offered through senior centers, libraries, Area Agencies on Aging, and community partners.
The Alzheimer's Association Washington and North Idaho Chapter facilitates a statewide network of free support groups for family caregivers, adult children, spouses, and people in the early stages of memory loss. Groups meet weekly or monthly, and many run for years. The chapter also operates the 24/7 helpline at 1-800-272-3900, free education classes, and a national database of support groups searchable by zip code.
Adult Day Health Care is a program Veterans can attend during the day for social activities, peer support, companionship, and recreation. It serves Veterans who need help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and fixing meals, who are isolated, or whose caregivers are worn out. Health services from nurses, therapists, and social workers may also be available. The program can give family caregivers a break and help Veterans and caregivers build skills to manage care at home. Programs run at VA medical centers, State Veterans Homes, or community organizations. Sessions can be half-day or full-day, usually several times a week, and transportation help may be available. Services may vary by location.
Walk With Ease is an Arthritis Foundation program promoted in Washington by the state Department of Health. The Washington version is self-directed. You register online, receive a guidebook or e-book, and complete a six-week walking program at your own pace with weekly supportive emails. SilverSneakers is a private fitness program operated by Tivity Health that is offered as a supplemental benefit through most Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, a few Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, and some group retiree health plans. When a member's Medicare plan covers SilverSneakers, the member pays no additional cost for participating gyms, group classes (chair yoga, strength training, water exercise), and on-demand online workouts. Whether a particular person has SilverSneakers depends entirely on which Medicare plan they are enrolled in. Renew Active (UnitedHealthcare) and One Pass (some plans) are similar but separate private bundles. This entry is included so caregivers can verify whether their parent's plan provides the benefit, and so people who do not have it can compare with WA-funded fitness programs like EnhanceFitness and A Matter of Balance.
