SilverSneakers (private benefit bundled with most Medicare Advantage plans)

Tivity Health (private operator)

SilverSneakers is a private fitness program operated by Tivity Health that is offered as a supplemental benefit through most Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, a few Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, and some group retiree health plans. When a member's Medicare plan covers SilverSneakers, the member pays no additional cost for participating gyms, group classes (chair yoga, strength training, water exercise), and on-demand online workouts. Whether a particular person has SilverSneakers depends entirely on which Medicare plan they are enrolled in. Renew Active (UnitedHealthcare) and One Pass (some plans) are similar but separate private bundles. This entry is included so caregivers can verify whether their parent's plan provides the benefit, and so people who do not have it can compare with WA-funded fitness programs like EnhanceFitness and A Matter of Balance.

Who qualifies

Anyone enrolled in a Medicare Advantage, Medigap, or retiree group health plan that includes SilverSneakers as a supplemental benefit. Check your specific plan documents or call your Medicare plan's member services. SilverSneakers is not means-tested, age 65+ or younger with Medicare disability eligibility.

What it covers

Free membership at participating gyms (most YMCAs, Anytime Fitness, many LA Fitness, many Planet Fitness locations participate; coverage varies by location). Group fitness classes designed for older adults at participating gyms and community centers. On-demand and live-streamed online workouts via the SilverSneakers app. A pool/pool-class option at participating facilities.

Cost

Free to the member if the Medicare plan includes SilverSneakers. No SilverSneakers benefit means no coverage. There is no way to subscribe directly outside a participating health plan.

How to apply

Look up your eligibility at silversneakers.com using your Medicare ID, or call your Medicare plan's member services number on the back of the card. If eligible, the site issues a member ID immediately. Walk into a participating gym with that ID and a photo ID to enroll. If your plan does not include SilverSneakers, consider WA-funded EnhanceFitness classes at senior centers (free or low cost regardless of insurance).
