EnhanceFitness

Project Enhance / Sound Generations

EnhanceFitness is an evidence-based group exercise program for older adults developed at the University of Washington's Health Promotion Research Center and Group Health (Kaiser Permanente Washington). Each one-hour class has four components: cardiovascular warmup and conditioning, strength training with hand and ankle weights, balance work, and flexibility. Classes are led by certified instructors and adapted for all fitness levels, including people who use a chair. Project Enhance, run by Sound Generations, manages the program nationally.

Who qualifies

Open to all older adults regardless of fitness level. Some sites set a minimum age of 55 or 60.

What it covers

Better cardiovascular health, stronger muscles and bones, improved balance, lower fall risk, reduced symptoms of arthritis, and improved mood. Recognized by the CDC and Administration for Community Living.

Cost

Free at many YMCAs and senior centers. Some sites charge a small monthly fee or require membership. Some Medicare Advantage plans (SilverSneakers, Renew Active) cover EnhanceFitness.
