Adult Family Home Licensure

WA DSHS HCLA Residential Care Services

Adult Family Homes (AFHs) are residential homes licensed by DSHS Residential Care Services to care for up to six non-related residents. They provide room, board, laundry, necessary supervision, and necessary help with activities of daily living, personal care, and social services. As of January 1, 2024, the DSHS orientation class is no longer required. Prospective operators must complete an AFH Administrator Training class (minimum 54 hours) along with CPR/First Aid, Food Safety, and caregiving experience requirements, then submit a complete application packet with building inspection per the AFH Initial Inspection Preparation Checklist (DSHS 10-695).

State licensure authorizing operation as an AFH; required for any home serving non-related adults for residential care, and required for Medicaid-funded placements.

How to apply

Complete an AFH Administrator Training class (minimum 54 hours) plus CPR/First Aid, Food Safety, and caregiving experience requirements, then submit the AFH application packet per instructions. The DSHS orientation class is no longer required as of January 1, 2024. Operators opening a second home should contact the Business Analysis & Applications Unit.
