State Veterans Homes (VA Recognition Program)

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

State Veterans Homes are facilities that provide nursing home, domiciliary, or adult day care. They are owned, operated, and managed by state governments. They date back to the post-Civil War era. To participate in the State Veterans Home program, the VA must formally recognize and certify a facility as a State Veterans Home; the VA then surveys all facilities each year to ensure they continue to meet VA standards. The VA does NOT manage State Veterans Homes. State Veterans Homes are in all 50 states and Puerto Rico; some states have more than one. The National Association of State Veterans Homes maintains a directory at https://nasvh.org/directory/.

Who qualifies

Each state establishes eligibility and admission criteria for its homes. Eligibility is also based on clinical need and setting availability. Some State Veterans Homes admit non-veteran spouses and Gold Star parents; others admit only veterans.

What it covers

Nursing home, domiciliary, or adult day health care (some homes provide more than one service). A recognized State Veterans Home may receive payments from the VA to help defray the cost of care provided to veterans.

Cost

Cost to the veteran varies by state. The VA pays a per-diem to recognized homes to help defray costs but does not pay for non-veterans' care. Talk with a VA social worker about cost specifics.

How to apply

Talk with a VA social worker about eligibility and cost. Find a home via the National Association of State Veterans Homes directory.
