VA Long-Term Care Services (Nursing Homes, Assisted Living, Home Health)

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

VA long-term care services include 24/7 nursing and medical care, physical therapy, help with daily tasks (bathing, dressing, meals, medications), comfort/pain care, and caregiver support. Care can be delivered in VA-run or community settings: VA Community Living Centers, Community Nursing Homes (VA-contracted), State Veterans Homes, medical foster homes, adult family homes, assisted living facilities, and Veterans' own homes through home-based primary care, homemaker/home health aide services, adult day health care, hospice, palliative care, and skilled home health care.

Who qualifies

Must be signed up for VA health care; VA must determine the service is needed for ongoing treatment and personal care; the service or space must be available near the Veteran. VA may also consider service-connected disability status and other insurance coverage.

What it covers

Access to a range of nursing-home, residential, and in-home long-term care services; some are covered under standard VA health benefits, others may require Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance to pay.

Cost

Some services are covered under standard VA health benefits (Veteran may still owe a copay); others are not covered and may be paid via Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance. VA benefits to help pay for nursing home care depend on income and service-connected disability rating, specific thresholds not stated on this page.

Contact your VA social worker, or call the VA health benefits hotline at 877-222-8387 (877-222-VETS), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET. If not enrolled, first apply for VA health care.
