Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL)
Washington State Department of Health
SAIL is a multi-component group exercise program developed by Washington State Department of Health and University of Washington researchers. In 2012, it was recognized as an evidence-based fall prevention program by the Administration on Aging (now the Administration for Community Living) under Title IIID. Each one-hour class includes a warm-up, aerobic activity, strength training, balance practice, and stretching. Classes are taught by trained instructors and can be done seated or standing. The program is supported by Washington DOH and local AAAs.
Who qualifies
Open to adults 65 and older. Some sites accept ages 50+. No income or insurance requirements. A health screening is recommended before starting.
What it covers
Reduced fall risk, better strength and balance, improved mood and energy, and a regular reason to leave the house and see other people.
Cost
Free or donation-based at most sites. Some hosts charge a small fee or require senior center membership.
How to apply
Use the SAIL class locator to find a class near you. Many senior centers run multiple SAIL classes per week.
