Remote Caregiving

WA DSHS HCLA

Remote caregiving lets people who qualify for Washington's long-term care personal care services receive non-hands-on support via secure video. Caregivers help with medication reminders, meal/hydration cues, encouragement with daily routines, behavior interventions, and wellness check-ins. It can be used alone or alongside in-person care. Through 12/31/2025 the service is offered through Catholic Community Services (using a platform called OnScreen). Beginning 1/1/2026, any DSHS-contracted home care agency may choose to participate.

Who qualifies

Must be approved for personal care services through a Washington state program; have tasks that can be supported remotely (reminders, check-ins, emotional support); be able to use basic video technology; and agree to receive some care remotely.

What it covers

Scheduled virtual caregiver visits providing medication reminders, meal/hydration/grooming cues, encouragement with daily routines, behavior interventions, wellness check-ins, and emotional support. No physical/hands-on assistance.

Cost

Delivered as part of Washington state-funded personal care services; no separate cost listed on the page. Standard long-term care eligibility and cost rules apply.

How to apply

Talk to your case manager or care coordinator to see if remote caregiving is right for you and to start a referral. To apply for personal care services in the first place, use Washington's DSHS application page.
