PEARLS (Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives)

UW Health Promotion Research Center

PEARLS was developed at the University of Washington Health Promotion Research Center and is delivered locally by AAAs, Sound Generations, and other community partners. A trained PEARLS counselor visits the participant in their home (or by telehealth) for six to eight sessions over four to five months. The counselor uses problem-solving therapy, behavioral activation, and pleasant-event scheduling to help the participant work through depression. Studies show PEARLS reduces depression symptoms in older adults more than usual care.

Who qualifies

Adults 60 and older with mild to moderate depression. Some sites accept ages 50+ or younger adults with disabilities. Referrals come through AAA intake, primary care, or self-referral. Not appropriate for active suicidality, severe depression, or active substance use, those situations are referred to higher-level care.

What it covers

Significant reduction in depression symptoms, more activity and engagement, and a structured connection during a hard period. Studies show effects last at least a year.

Cost

Free at most Washington sites. Funded by AAAs and grants.

How to apply

Contact your local AAA or your primary care provider for a PEARLS referral. Sound Generations runs PEARLS in King County.
